Kara’s Collection: Sisterhood—a guest post from my seester

My sister and I share a very special bond; we share the bond of sisterhood. We are dear friends. We have helped each other celebrate all of life’s joys. We have held hands through thunderstorms. We have whispered secrets late at night. We have giggled until our tummies ached. We have leaned on each other for support when we could not stand on our own. We have loved, respected, cherished, enjoyed, argued, made up, advised, listened, and told one another the painful truth our whole lives. We complement each other. We have a relationship that is so special to me. It is hard to put into words. We are very close. We are sisters.

It was one, simple question. One that a caring niece asked a broken-hearted aunt. But the simplicity cannot be mistaken for insignificant.

We walked along Oregon’s beautiful Willamette River as it wandered its way through Eugene. Kara graciously matched her pace to mine and offered me the baby’s stroller handle to stay upright.

My happy life, just 3 days prior, had been shattered. The beautiful ugly of death had suddenly burst into my world. Jesus called John home. From the rainy Northwest to eternity. Oh, such magnificent beauty for John, the artist. What a gaping hole left in his wake. After 37 years of marriage our journeys—John’s and mine—suddenly diverged.

The tiniest fraction of MF readers requested a recipe for Frito Pie, so Blythe graciously suggested it be posted for posterity. And her sweet family enjoyed some with us for fun! The simple version is below, and wouldn’t even require words if the artistry were more convincing. This visual instruction method works well when delivering the culinary dish to, say, sleep-deprived new parents.

Suffering is everywhere. Everywhere I look or turn, every friend has their trial. The last few weeks have been hard. Friends have had cancer return. My daughter’s eczema has majorly flared up for unknown reasons, and we’re in a rough time of trying to comfort, treat, and figure out the latest trigger. Other friends are struggling through what they thought would be the best moments of their life, surprised to find they are the hardest. Many quietly deal with health issues that will likely plague them for life. Suffering is suffocating. It drags down good moments. Steals one day, then one week, then one year at a time. It’s all consuming.

Here we are. Right where we knew in our souls we might be one day, but where we prayed and prayed we wouldn’t be. Doing life without Kara.

Grief is strange. Some days I function almost normally. Other days, the simplest thing will bring me to tears. At times, it’s as though a dam has broken inside of me that may never be patched. I compare my grief to others and I’m left confused. Why are they doing it that way and I’m doing it this way?
