Kara’s Collection: Tragedy in Connecticut (2012-12-15 08:40)

Oh, my heart is so grieved by what happened in Connecticut. I cannot imagine the devastation of that small community. We lived in the town next to Littleton after the shooting at Columbine. It was horrific, devastating, but in the aftermath we saw a new conversation begin. It was not a call for gun control or mental health services. There was a call to examine one’s heart. To look into eternity and examine what happens after death. Cassie Bernall was killed for her faith in Jesus, and her faith caused many to examine their own lives.

Courageous grief: Welcome back, Jason!

Courageous grief: Welcome back, Jason!

Sunday was a big, fat deal for our Westside Church family: Jason preached for the first time since Kara’s Homecoming. As he explained to the new folks who have joined us since then, the elders graciously gave him up to 6 months for a sabbatical so that he could grieve and take care of his children and learn what their new normal is going to look like. Expressing his gratitude, he also explained that he wants Westside to be the kind of generous church that loves well in the midst of tragedy like he and his family have been loved. I can honestly say that Westside IS that kind of church, and it’s greatly because of Jason and Kara’s vulnerability in asking and allowing us to walk their impossible story with them.

When Kara asked me to take over as Editor in Chief of Mundane Faithfulness once she went Home, I thought I knew what to expect with writing and editing for her blog. What I didn’t expect was getting to know so many people through MF and hearing so many stories. Stories that are shared on the blog in the comments section, on Facebook, or emailed directly to us. I can’t even tell you what an honor it is to be invited in to share bits of your hearts. I love reading them, praying with and for you, witnessing God’s grace in your lives (especially in the hurts), and seeing you all connect with each other. It has been a huge blessing.

Some days life presents you with a giant pill to swallow. This year has found us trying to swallow some big ones. Certainly, hearing my cancer diagnosis was the biggest. God was so gracious to help us stomach our new reality one moment at a time.

Kindred Spirits: Mary’s Story

Kindred Spirits: Mary’s Story

I met Kara when I was 14. She and Jason had moved to town to take a job as the youth director at my church. My home church was not the easiest to jump in to; long lines of family ties had sewn us together, and breaking into that proved to be difficult. But I didn’t realize this until Kara told me years later—it had seemed so natural to her! She had immediately jumped in, befriending and loving us angsty teens. I remember chatting with my girlfriends about Kara—how we thought she was funny and so different. She was straight-forward and fun in ways that our small southern town wasn't. We laughed when she didn't understand the rules, but it ended up being one of my favorite parts of who she was.
