Who remembers the Bill Murray movie, What About Bob? Remember the scene where Bob is tied to the mast of the sailboat and he keeps screaming, I’M SAILING! I felt like that yesterday. All day I kept thinking, I’M CLEANING! I’M DRIVING! I’M IN TARGET! I know it sounds ridiculous, and I certainly had opportunity to do some of these things along this journey, but with each new day I feel such gratitude for the ability to do more, and a greater gratitude that I don’t have to go back into the chemo room again.

So, several people have expressed interest in the playlist I created for Kara’s book release party, as mentioned in my previous guest blog. At Blythe’s request, I have posted said playlist below—but first a few disclaimers:

Kara asked me to put the playlist together at the last minute. All of the songs are from my own iTunes library—hence the embarrassing preponderance of 1980s artists. Given more time to think and prepare, I probably would have made some different and more varied selections.

I remember the first years of marriage being a struggle because I had such unrealistic expectations of what marriage was supposed to be. The world jades us and causes us to create idols of what true love is.

What romance is. Very little of service, sacrifice, and kindness is portrayed in love stories we have been fed. Jason had a much more clear understanding of love than I did. Plus, his personality is gentle and giving. From the start, he knew romance, in its true form, was simple service and kindness.

When thinking about writing the story of my friendship with Kara, I left the inspiration to God, trusting that He would gift it when the time was right so that I could express well my feelings about this special girl.

Sure enough, He was faithful! It happened just after my annual ironing session the other day; as I went to put away the freshly ironed linen napkins that we had used at last Thanksgiving, I encountered this: colorful, vintage pinwheels. A whole bag full of them. Sitting there in the drawer. My breath caught itself short, and I had to sit down. The time to write my Kara story had come.
